How much does it cost?

What are the costs of insulation?

Cost of Insulating Your Home

You can insulate your home in various ways and with different materials. The costs vary and therefore depend on the type of insulation you choose, for example: cavity wall insulation, roof insulation, floor insulation, and underfloor insulation. But which one you choose, and therefore the total cost, also depends on your type of house. For example, you’ll pay different prices for a terraced house than for a detached house or corner house.

The costs you incur to insulate your home will ultimately more than pay for themselves and save you a lot of money. The savings can amount to as much as £1,000 per year* (detached house).

Reduce the Cost of Insulating Your Home with Subsidies

Insulating your home may be a bit expensive, but it’s still a relatively inexpensive first step towards sustainability. And the government offers significant incentives through subsidies. You can receive a subsidy for each of the options mentioned above, making the cost much more attractive. Subsidy rates vary by house type and insulation type, but they can be substantial. If you implement two measures, you can recoup up to 30% of the costs. (source: Milieu Centraal).

*The savings mentioned are based on an average home with three occupants and a high-efficiency combi boiler, no insulation, single glazing, and a gas price of £1.20/m³ (2022 price level). Actual savings depend on your personal heating habits and the type of home. The subsidy is an average and depends on your specific situation.

Insulation remains one of the most cost-effective and sustainable measures you can take to make your home more energy-efficient and comfortable. The savings on energy costs, increased property value, and positive environmental impact make it a very worthwhile investment in England.

In England, there are various subsidies for home insulation:

1. Renovation Grant
Purpose: For energy-saving work (including insulation).
Amount: Up to €10,000, depending on income.
Requirements: Home older than 25 years.

2. Fluvius Energy Grants
Amount: Up to €6,000 for roof insulation, €5,000 for wall insulation.
Requirements: EPC rating of F or E.

3. Energy Vouchers
Amount: Up to €1,250 for energy-saving measures.
Requirements: Income limits.

4. Reduced VAT Rate (6%)
Purpose: VAT reduction for insulation work on homes older than 10 years.

5. Green Loan
Amount: Up to €25,000 for energy-saving investments.

6. Premium for HR++ glass
Amount: €3 per m² for replacing single glazing.

Insulation is good for the environment because it reduces energy consumption, meaning you need less heating or cooling. This leads to lower CO2 emissions, which helps combat climate change. Insulation also improves your home’s energy efficiency, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and promoting the use of renewable energy. Many insulation materials are also environmentally friendly, further reducing their environmental impact. In short, insulation not only helps lower your energy costs but also your carbon footprint.

In England, the most important insulation measures are:

  1. Roof insulation: Prevents heat loss through the roof.
  2. Cavity wall insulation: Insulates the space between the inner and outer walls.
  3. Floor insulation: Prevents heat loss through the floor.
  4. Facade insulation: Insulating outer walls, often in older homes.
  5. Glass insulation (HR++ or triple glazing): Replacing single or double glazing with high-performance glass.
  6. Crawlspace insulation: Insulating the space under the house to keep out damp and cold.
  7. Draft stripping and sealing: Sealing cracks and seams to prevent drafts.

These measures help reduce energy consumption and to improve living comfort.
